    An outbreak of a novel coronavirus (COVID-19 or 2019-CoV) infection has posed significant threats to international health and the economy. In the absence of treatment for this virus, there is an urgent need to find alternative methods to control the spread of disease. Here, we have conducted an online search for all treatment options related to coronavirus infections as well as some RNA-virus infection and we have found that general treatments, coronavirus-specific treatments, and antiviral treatments should be useful in fighting COVID-19. We suggest that the nutritional status of each infected patient should be evaluated before the administration of general treatments and the current children's RNA-virus vaccines including influenza vaccine should be immunized for uninfected people and health care workers. In addition, convalescent plasma should be given to COVID-19 patients if it is available. In conclusion, we suggest that all the potential interventions be implemented to control the emerging COVID-19 if the infection is uncontrollable.

    In recent years viral respiratory tract infections, especially influenza viruses, have had a major impact on communities worldwide as a result of unavailability of effective treatment or vaccine. The frequent alterations in the antigenic structures of respiratory viruses, particularly for RNA viruses, pose difficulties in production of effective vaccines. The unavailability of optimal medication and shortage of effective vaccines suggests the requirement for alternative natural therapies. Several herbal remedies were used for prevention and treatment viral respiratory illnesses. Among those that were found effective included maoto, licorice roots, antiwei, North American ginseng, berries, Echinacea, plants extracted carnosic acid, pomegranate, guava tea, and Bai Shao. There is scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of several complementary therapies for colds. Oral zinc may reduce the length and severity of a cold. Taking vitamin C supplements on a regular basis only slightly reduces the length and severity of colds. Probiotics were found better than placebo in reducing the number episodes of acute upper respiratory tract infections, the rate of episodes of acute upper respiratory tract infection and reducing antibiotic use. Alkaline diets or drinks might have antiviral properties as in vitro studies demonstrated inactivation effect of alkaline medium on respiratory virus. Earthing might have a natural anti-inflammatory effect for human body. It is now accepted that an overwhelming inflammatory response is the cause of human deaths from avian H5N1 influenza infection. Earthing accelerates immune response following vaccination, as demonstrated by increases of gamma globulin concentration. No in vivo or clinical studies were found that investigate the role of alkalization or earthing on respiratory viral infections. Thus, future studies are recommended to reveal any potential curative effects.

    BACKGROUND:Nosocomial infections are a major public health issue and preventative strategies using probiotics and micronutrients are being evaluated.

    AIM:To investigate the efficacy of a mixture of Lactobacillus GG and micronutrients in preventing nosocomial infections in children.

    METHODS:A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted in hospitalised children. Children (6 months to 5 years of age) received Lactobacillus GG (6× 10(9) CFU/day) together with vitamins B and C and zinc or placebo, for 15 days, starting on the first day of hospitalisation. The incidence of gastrointestinal and respiratory nosocomial infections after discharge was determined by follow-up telephone call at 7 days. After 3 months, another telephone call estimated the incidence of further infections during follow-up.

    RESULTS:Ninety children completed the follow-up. Of 19/90 children with a nosocomial infection (20%), 4/45 children (9%) were in the treatment group and 15/45 (33%) in the placebo group (P = 0.016). Specifically, 2/45 (4%) children in the treatment group vs. 11/45 (24%) children in the placebo group (P = 0.007) presented with diarrhoea. The duration of hospitalisation was significantly shorter in the treatment group (3.9 days± 1.7 vs. 4.9 ± 1.2; P = 0.003). At the follow-up, a total of 11/45 (24.4%) children in the treatment group had at least one episode of infection compared to 22/45 (48.9%) in the placebo group (P = 0.016).

    CONCLUSION:A mixture containing Lactobacillus GG and micronutrients may reduce the incidence of nosocomial infections, supporting the hypothesis that this may represent a valid strategy to prevent nosocomial infections.

  • Reversing age-related eye conditions

    <a href=There seems to be a general acceptance that we will lose sight with age, and little can be done to prevent it. Age-related far-sightedness (hyperopia) is the most common problem, with glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and cataracts also considered part of the aging process. 

    None of that is true. There are plenty of ways to slow or halt the degeneration of the eyes with just a bit of preventive or corrective medicine. 

    Having followed my own advice, I no longer need glasses for reading. Dr Jose Mendonca, a renowned dental surgeon and jaw specialist, was diagnosed with myopia (short-sightedness) and prescribed glasses since age 11, but he now flies a plane and reads with minimal corrective lenses. He’s continued to improve since 2018.

    I suspect that all the so-called “age-related” eye problems are largely due to the lens stiffening due to deficiency in vitamin C (see box, right), which is why one of the key healers to these issues is vitamin C. 

    The business of sight requires huge amounts of energy. The job of the retina is to convert the stimulus of a photon landing on it into an electrical signal that the brain can work with. 

    The brain makes up 2 percent of our total body weight but consumes 20 percent of all the energy generated. The retina, relative to its weight, demands energy at a rate 10 times higher than the brain. No system can generate energy perfectly without some collateral damage. 

    These damaging units are free radicals. In chemical terms, free radicals have an unpaired electron. This makes them very “sticky” to other substances, and in sticking, they denature and damage those substances, causing degeneration. 

    Indeed, this is the mechanism that results in the three major eye diseases of cataract, glaucoma and macular degeneration. To mop up these free radicals we need an excellent antioxidant system.

    Cultured skin equivalent (SE, Mimeskin) was generated by co-culturing skin fibroblasts and keratinocytes on a collagen-glycosaminoglycan-chitosan dermal substrate. In order to examine donor age effect, fibroblasts from 19- (young) or 49- (aged) year-old females were used. Culture medium was supplemented with nutrients complex containing soy extract, tomato extract, grape seed extract, white tea extract, sodium ascorbate, tocopherol acetate, zinc gluconate and BioMarine complex. Epidermal and dermal structure and composition were examined after 42 and 60 days of culture. In untreated samples, SE generated from young fibroblasts was superior to SE from aged fibroblasts in all characteristics. Those include number and regularity of keratinocyte layers, number of keratinocytes expressing proliferation marker Ki67, content of collagen type I, fibrillin-1, elastin, and SE lifespan. Effects of nutritional supplementation were observed in SE from both young and aged fibroblasts, however, those effects were more pronounced in SE from aged fibroblasts. In epidermis, the treatment increased number of keratinocyte layers and delayed epidermal senescence. The number of cells expressing Ki67 was nine folds higher than those of controls, and was similar to that of young cell SE. In dermis, the treatment increased mRNA synthesis of collagen I, fibrillin-1 and elastin. In conclusion, skin cell donor age had major important effect on formation of reconstructed SE. Imperfections in epidermal and dermal structure and composition as well as life span in SE from aged cells can be improved by supplementation with active nutrients.

    OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether nutritional intervention with a proprietary formulation and other micronutrients may favourably alter skin roughness and elasticity. METHODS: Sixty-two women aged 45-73 years participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial testing the efficacy of a proprietary oral supplement for skin nutrition (Evelle), for improvement of skin elasticity and roughness. The active ingredients were vitamins C and E, carotenoids, selenium, zinc, amino acids and glycosaminoglycans, blueberry extract and Pycnogenol. RESULTS: Skin elasticity, measured using an optical cutometer, was found to be statistically significantly increased by 9% after 6 weeks of treatment compared with placebo (p=0.0351). Skin roughness, as evaluated by three-dimensional microtopography imaging, was found to be statistically significantly lowered by 6% compared with the control group after 12 weeks treatment (p=0.0157). CONCLUSION: Evelle can potentially improve visible signs of cutaneous ageing.

    Zinc and vitamin C supplementation of the body is important for CNS functioning. Zinc ions are involved in the neurotransmission (signal transmission from acetylcholine, catecholamine, serotonin, prostaglandin receptors) and in ubiquitin-related protein degradation. Zinc deficits are associated with Alzheimer's disease and depression. Zinc supplementation (10-30 mg daily) improves neurologic recovery rate in patients with stroke and brain injury, has a positive impact on memory and reduces hyperactivity in children. Vitamin C, a zinc synergist, maintains antioxidant resources of the brain, synaptic activity and detoxification. Vitamin C in dose 130-500 mg daily should be used to prevent dementia and neurodegenerative pathology.

    BACKGROUND: In recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB), a good nutritional balance is necessary to obtain healing of the chronic wounds. However, involvement of the oral mucosa and oesophagus stenosis may be responsible for severe nutritional deficiencies. OBJECTIVE: In order to propose an adapted nutritional management, we studied the vitamin and trace metal status of 14 RDEB patients. METHODS: Height and weight were measured. Plasma levels of albumin, iron, ferritin, calcium, parathyroid hormone (PTH), folates, vitamins C, D, B12, A, E, B1, B6, PP and B2, zinc, selenium, carnitine and copper were measured. RESULTS: Most patients had a significant growth retardation. We found iron, vitamin D, C, B6, PP, zinc and selenium deficiencies in 36-70% of the patients, without clinical expression, except in one case. Vitamin B1, 12, B2, A/RBP, E/lipids and carnitine were normal. The three patients with gastrostomy feeding had better growth but still a protein deficiency and sometimes vitamin C, B6, PP, zinc and carnitine deficiencies. CONCLUSION: Vitamin and trace metal deficiencies are frequent in RDEB, even in patients receiving gastrostomy feeding, and often go unrecognized. Regular nutritional evaluation is necessary. Dietary advice and supplements should be given. Enteral feeding by gastrostomy should be discussed in early childhood.

    It might even block some symptoms and shorten the length of an infection, even in people who aren’t deficient in the vitamin.

    Researchers from Western Sydney University estimate that zinc—either put under the tongue or a nasal spray—can cut infection time by as much as two days. People who supplemented also saw “significant reductions” in the severity of symptoms three days into the infection.

    OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether zinc supplementation could affect serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels in congenital and acquired cardiac patients attending for an influenza vaccine.

    METHODS: 9-18 years old, voluntary children with cardiac disease were weighed, measured height and blood samples for hemoglobin level, zinc level, IgA and IgG titers of influenza A and B serotypes and TNF-α levels were obtained. The children were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups: ZV group received both zinc supplementation and influenza vaccine; V group received influenza vaccine. Serum TNF-α levels were measured at 28 days after the immunization.

    RESULTS: Mean (±SD) serum zinc level was 100 (±20)μg/dL. Cases with congenital heart disease had lower serum zinc levels than acquired ones (93±17μg/dL, 116±18μg/dL; respectively, p<0.001). Median titers of serum TNF-α decreased after vaccination (78.9pg/mL, 74.8pg/mL; p<0.05) but this significant change occurred only in ZV group (77.1pg/mL, 73.4pg/mL; p=0.001). Vaccine associated adverse events were similar in ZV and V groups except malaise (0% in ZV and 23.8% in V group; p<0.05). Adverse events were similar in patients with congenital and acquired heart diseases. During the previous influenza season, 77.3% had more than two episodes of upper respiratory tract infection (URTI), however, after vaccination only 13.6% had more than two episode of URTI.

    CONCLUSION: Zinc supplementation has a beneficial effect on malaise, one of the influenza vaccine associated adverse events, and decrease serum TNF-α levels.
