    Objectives: Cisplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy is a debilitating side effect in patients receiving this drug. Recent studies suggest hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy as a new treatment approach for models of neural injury. The aim of the current study was to determine the protective effects of HBO preconditioning against peripheral neuropathy induced by Cisplatin (CDDP).

    Materials and methods: The present study was conducted on 4 groups of rats: Sham group; HBO group (60 min/d); Control group (CDDP 2 mg/kg/d); Precondition group (HBO+CDDP). Mechanical threshold testing was weekly carried out using von Frey filament. Sciatic nerve and associated ganglia were removed five weeks after the first CDDP injection for biochemical evaluation of malondialdehyde (MDA) content and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, immunohistochemistry of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL), TNF-α, caspase-3 and iNOS, and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) assessments.

    Results: MDA levels and MPO activities were significantly decreased in preconditioned rats. Attenuated TUNEL reaction along with attenuated caspase-3, TNF-α, and iNOS expression could be significantly detected in preconditioned rats. Also, HBO preconditioning improved the nociceptive threshold.

    Conclusion: The results suggest that HBO preconditioning can attenuate peripheral neuropathy caused by cisplatin in rats.

    We assessed the acute effect of beetroot extract intake on cardiovascular and autonomic recovery subsequent to strength exercise.This is a crossover, randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled trial. We assessed 16 subjects but only 12 healthy male adults completed the two protocols in two randomized days: Beetroot extract (600 mg in capsule) and placebo (600 mg starch in capsule). Beetroot extract or placebo was ingested, the subjects endured 120 minutes seated at rest, followed by a 75% 1RM strength exercise and then remained seated for 60 minutes at rest. Cardiorespiratory parameters, heart rate (HR) variability (HRV) (SDNN, rMSSD, pNN50, SD1, SD2 HF [ms]) were estimated before, during exercise and during recovery from exercise.ingestion of beetroot extract before exercise: accelerates the recovery of SBP following physical effort; improves HR recovery to baseline resting levels (beetroot protocol: change in∼62% vs. placebo protocol: change in ∼80%), and intensifies the return of vagal HR control during recovery after exercise.Beetroot extract acutely improved cardiovascular and autonomic recovery after exercise.

    Endothelial mitochondria, the major site of ATP generation, modulate the intracellular dynamics of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which, in turn, control endothelial function. Adequate oxygen (O(2)) supply is required by endothelial cells (EC). Both hypoxia and hyperoxia may favor the overproduction of ROS leading to oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage and endothelial dysfunction. We investigated the capability and mechanisms of Cellfood™ (CF), an antioxidant compound, to modulate O(2) availability and mitochondrial respiratory metabolism and to regulate ROS generated by hypoxia in EC in vitro. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and ECV-304 were evaluated for the O(2) consumption using a Clark's electrode. The O(2) consumption rate rose, during the first minutes after CF addition and was associated with increase in mitochondrial oxidative capacity and good cell viability. Similar behaviours were observed when EC were exposed to CF for up to 8 days. The O(2) consumption increased and was accompanied by both intracellular rise of ATP and maintainment of LDH concentration. Hypoxia-induced ROS generation was significantly inhibited by CF, through the up-regulated expression of MnSOD, an anti-oxidant responsible for mitochondrial function preservation. The EC hypoxic response is mediated by the hypoxia master regulator HIF-1alpha whose activation was attenuated by CF, in concomitance with MnSOD up-regulation. Our results suggest a role for CF in improoving respiratory metabolism and in activating anti-oxidant mechanisms in EC, thus preserving endothelial function.

    ROME 02 March 2020 - Until less than 20 years ago, coronaviruses represented a viral family that during the winter period caused 10 to 30% of colds, therefore it was not worth worrying about it. In 2002 the situation changed with the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Sindrom) which in China affected 8 thousand individuals and caused about 10% of mortality with a virus that infected dogs and cats from the bat and then hit humans. After the leopard spots of the MERS (Middle East Respiratory Sindrom) in 2012 in South Arabia and as an epidemic in 2015 in South Korea, camel coronavirus, at the end of 2019 with a particular epicenter at the Huanan city market of the Wuhan metropolis , Hubei's province a new coronavirus appears, then appealed COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019), which after passing into exotic animals pangolin, porcupine infects humans and adapts with greater virulence so as to subsequently establish interhuman infection and the spread of a mysterious pneumonia before its isolation and genetic study, variability from 2 to 12% compared to the original bat coronavirus.

    While the history of epidemics repeats itself over the centuries, the basic rules have not changed by isolating the patient and carrying out the quarantine, thus from the Athens typhoid fever of 430 b.c. to the plague of Manzonian memory, 1600 AD to the Spanish of 1918, the flu that claimed more victims than the just ended First World War. The photo of President Xi with the face mask and the public declaration of danger showed a delay that cost human lives, despite that early diagnosis by the ophthalmologist Wen Lee who died from this epidemic disease.

    The virus appeared controllable and non-aggressive in the infection, providing after 10 days from the communication to the WHO, the viral genome to the American CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) which immediately confirmed the fingerprints of the new coronavirus for the preparation of a diagnostic kit to be used globally for all healthcare institutions and to distinguish this infection from ongoing seasonal flu. Obviously this viral nucleic acid will allow us to know the proteins produced by viral RNA for the synthesis of specific antigens and antiviral drugs. The speech of the vaccine will take time and although stem cell methodologies can be used, 12-18 years will be needed for safe treatment.

    Northern Italy, especially Lombardia and Veneto, has been affected by the COVID-19 coronavirus epidemic for a week. Trying to isolate the carriers of the disease in connection with China is not an effective strategy to contain the disease, since the virus is transmitted like the flu virus and we can expect to have patients who have had no contact with possible carriers. Many cases are not diagnosed because people have not yet developed symptoms and do not know they have been exposed to the virus. Therefore, bearing in mind what is really happening, the blocking of flights with China was useless, however it was bypassed by the indirect connection of flights through other countries. It would have been better to implement the federal quarantine declared by the USA on February 2 with two weeks of isolation which corresponds to the longest time between exposure and the onset of symptoms and affects all subjects who have had contacts both outside and inside China.

    The risk represented by COVID-19 is substantially the same as that of the many flu epidemics that occur every year without causing a sensation.
    Let's take an example. Every year about ten thousand people die in Italy (mostly elderly or suffering from some previous pathology) from influenza virus. This is not news, especially because these deaths are scattered throughout the national territory. Now imagine that all people at risk are hospitalized in a couple of places, perhaps surrounded by journalists looking for some scoop. Rest assured that the resulting "flu epidemic that can cause death" will push countless people (about six million Italians are affected by flu syndrome each year) to demand analysis and an assistance impossible to obtain.

    If every gallon of gasoline contains 20 pounds (9 kilograms) of carbon dioxide, then a hybrid car will emit 51.6 pounds (23.1 kilograms) of carbon dioxide every 100 miles (161 kilometers), while a conventional car will emit 74.9 pounds (34 kilograms). If you multiply those numbers over the lifetime of a vehicle, hybrids more than make up for their heavier production footprint. Let's look at some more lifetime emissions numbers.

    Beta Amyloid Plaques Found in the Brains of Young Adults

    A new study lead by Changiz Geula, a research professor at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, found evidence of Alzheimer’s disease in the brains of deceased adults as young as 20 years old. The research team analyzed the brains of 13 people between the ages of 20-66 with no health issues, 14 people without dementia between the ages of 70-99, and 21 brains of people with Alzheimer’s between the ages of 60-95. They observed that toxic amyloid buildup was evident irrelevant of age and health.

    Amyloid buildup is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s, which is commonly found in the brains of seniors who have the disease. “Amyloid is bad,” said Geula. “We don’t know the exact mechanism by which it causes damage, or if amyloid buildup is the main trigger for Alzheimer’s, so we can’t say that it actually causes the disease. But for a long time we have known that it causes toxic damage, and it cannot be good for you when it accumulates.”

    Abstract:

    The purpose of this study was to systematically review the scientific literature about the effects of supplementation with Ashwagandha () on maximum oxygen consumption (VO), as well as to provide directions for clinical practice. A systematic search was conducted in three electronic databases following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Guidelines (PRISMA). The inclusion criteria were: (a) VOdata, with means± standard deviation before and after the supplement intervention, (b) the study was randomized controlled trial (RCT), (c) the article was written in English. The quality of evidence was evaluated according to the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach.A meta-analysis was performed to determine effect sizes. Five studies were selected in the systematic review (162 participants) and four were included in the meta-analysis (142 participants). Results showed a significant enhancement in VOin healthy adults and athletes (= 0.04). The mean difference was 3.00 (95% CI from 0.18 to 5.82) with high heterogeneity. In conclusion, Ashwagandha supplementation might improve the VOin athlete and non-athlete people. However, further research is need to confirm this hypothesis since the number of studies is limited and the heterogeneity was high.

    There is a distinct correlation between aluminium (Al) intoxication and neurodegenerative diseases (ND). We demonstrated how patients affected by ND showing Al intoxication benefit from short-term treatment with calcium disodium ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) (chelation therapy). Such therapy further improved through daily treatment with the antioxidant Cellfood. In the present study we examined the efficacy of long-term treatment, using both EDTA and Cellfood. Slow intravenous treatment with the chelating agent EDTA (2 g/10 mL diluted in 500 mL physiological saline administered in 2 h) (chelation test) removed Al, which was detected (using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) in urine samples collected from patients over 12 h. Patients that revealed Al intoxication (expressed in μg per g creatinine) underwent EDTA chelation therapy once a week for ten weeks, then once every two weeks for a further six or twelve months. At the end of treatment (a total of 22 or 34 chelation therapies, respectively), associated with daily assumption of Cellfood, Al levels in the urine samples were analysed. In addition, the following blood parameters were determined: homocysteine, vitamin B12, and folate, as well as the oxidative status e.g. reactive oxygen species (ROS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), oxidized LDL (oxLDL), and glutathione. Our results showed that Al intoxication reduced significantly following EDTA and Cellfood treatment, and clinical symptoms improved. After treatment, ROS, oxLDL, and homocysteine decreased significantly, whereas vitamin B12, folate and TAC improved significantly. In conclusion, our data show the efficacy of chelation therapy associated with Cellfood in subjects affected by Al intoxication who have developed ND.

    The higher the temperature goes above the 'normal' 37 degrees C (98.6 degrees F), the more the body speeds up its natural defences against tumours, wounds and infections.

    Conversely, a low body temperature of around 34 degrees C—which routinely happens when we sleep—can trigger inflammatory processes such as heart disease, which would explain why shift workers or people who suffer from frequent jet lag or insomnia are more prone to inflammatory diseases. Our 24-hour body clock can cope with the natural drop in temperature when we sleep, but the risk of inflammatory disease and cancer rises when it is low for longer periods.

    Objective: This prospective pilot study aimed at evaluating the effects of therapy with antioxidant compounds (Cellfood, and other antioxidants) on patients affected by neurodegenerative diseases (ND), who displayed toxic metal burden and were subjected to chelation treatment with the chelating agent calcium disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (CaNa2EDTA or EDTA).

    Methods: Two groups of subjects were studied: (a) 39 patients affected by ND and (b) 11 subjects unaffected by ND (controls). The following blood parameters were analyzed before and after three months' treatment with chelation+Cellfood or chelation+other antioxidants: oxidative status (reactive oxygen species, ROS; total antioxidant capacity, TAC; oxidized LDL, oxLDL; glutathione), homocysteine, vitamin B12, and folate.

    Results: After 3-months' chelation+Cellfood administration oxLDL decreased, ROS levels were significantly lower, and TAC and glutathione levels were significantly higher than after chelation+other antioxidants treatment, both in ND patients and in controls. Moreover, homocysteine metabolism had also improved in both groups.

    Conclusions: Chelation+Cellfood treatment was more efficient than chelation+other antioxidants improving oxidative status and homocysteine metabolism significantly in ND patients and controls. Although limited to a small number of cases, this study showed how helpful antioxidant treatment with Cellfood was in improving the subjects' metabolic conditions.
