Stop taking aspirin every day if you’re over 60

<a href=Anyone over the age of 60 should stop taking an aspirin a day to prevent heart disease—the risks of stomach bleeding outweigh any benefits.

Current guidelines recommend the over-sixties should take an aspirin as part of their daily health regime to reduce their chances of cardiovascular disease, heart attack and stroke.

But the US’s Preventive Services Task Force has said the risks of serious—and possibly life-threatening—stomach bleeding are too great, and only those who have already had a heart attack or stroke should continue taking the medication.

The benefits of daily aspirin are marginal in the over-50s, and offer only a small benefit to those who are in their 40s.

The task force is an independent group of researchers who have assessed the latest evidence, and their conclusions go against current medical advice.

Only previous heart attack and stroke patients should continue taking aspirin, they say, and should come off the medication only after consulting with their doctor.
